Shutter Island

This book is different from my normal posts. It's a sort of mystery - what's really happening on Shutter Island?

Teddy Daniels is a Federal Marshal, who's venturing to Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients. He's interested in looking at some of the records, however, the hospital won't let him view those records. In fact, they won't let him do much of anything.

He keeps seeing these people who are telling him some secrets about Shutter Island. Secrets that he doesn't really believe at first. After the refusal of records, though, he begins to see some of the truth behind these accusations.

He begins to investigate something other than the disappearance when the patient suddenly returns. A storm is keeping them from leaving the island, so he searches for answers to his next question: what are they doing in the lighthouse? And why are all of these patients so afraid of it?

Shutter Island is a great book, and movie for that matter. A word of caution to those who want to attempt this one: Pay attention! If you don't pay close attention, you will be lost and will not understand a bit of it.
Give it a try though, I highly recommend this one.

*I don't want to give too much away on this one because once you find out what the secrets are, there's really not much point to read it and it's harder to get into.

  1. I did see the movie and enjoyed it immensely. Seeing that I know pretty much what the story line is, do you recommend I not read this then? On another note, most say that the book is always better than the movie, have you ever found a movie that was at least close to as good if not as good as the book?

  2. I think if I hadn't seen the movie before I read the book, I would have been completely lost. I do suggest reading the book just for a more detailed story than the movie. It does provide some insight and is a very interesting book. If you liked the movie, you'll LOVE this book.

  3. I have always wanted to watch that movie and I heard that it was really good. I did not know that there was a book as well. I knew that you had to pay attention to the movie, but it is extremely hard to do that with a very hyper three-year-old running around. I think that I will take your advice and watch the movie first and then if I somehow find the time to read the book, then I will.

  4. I saw the beginning of the movie on the TV...by accident. Then I quickly shut it off once I realized what it was lol. I haven't been able to read the book yet and it was almost ruined for me by my curiosity. It sounds like a book that I would want to read numerous times, just to make sure that I didn't miss anything =D. Great postings as usual Amanda!

  5. Oh! There's also a video game that kind of took this story and twisted it a bit...can't remember the name...I want to say it was folklore? Maybe...

  6. I didn't know about the video game.. That seems interesting. I'm not usually one for video games, but maybe I'll have to look at it.
